Sustainable Development Strategy

Issue

Municipal governments represent key stakeholders in energy use and subsequent conservation strategies. As owners of a large stock of commercial buildings across the country, their emissions have a significant impact on the Canadian environment.

Position

REALpac believes engaging governments at all three levels is imperative in reducing the energy use of the commercial real estate industry and trust the following recommendations will help municipal governments achieve their goals, targets, and implementation strategies by:

• Taking into account greenhouse gas production, and materials recycling in municipal planning documents and plans;
• Encouraging government buildings to seek LEED or an equivalent certification;
• Introducing a 50% increase in the service standard if for a LEED or other green building permit;
• Creation of Green Precincts;
• Taking into account water conservation in local planning documents; and,
• Creating water utility programs to incent water conservation and greywater systems.
